California schools need $10 BILLION in repairs and new facilities
All of California’s students deserve schools that meet basic health and safety standards now more than ever.
- California is overdue in repairing and upgrading older schools throughout the state. Hundreds of California schools are waiting on state funds to ensure safe, secure, and up-to-date learning environments.
- California needs $10 billion for critical repairs to schools and requests for new facilities. Outdated schools place students in unsafe and unhealthy learning environments, especially in already struggling communities
- California leaders can avoid a student health crisis by investing in unfunded approved projects that repair lead pipes, remove asbestos, expand and remodel existing schools and build new ones where they are needed.
- By investing $10 billion in budget surplus funds – without raising taxes or financing bonds – California leaders can address the health and safety needs of students in all communities across our state by properly updating, repairing, and creating adequate facilities.
We can avoid the next California Crisis.
It's Time to Fix Our Old Schools and Build New Schools in
Growing Communities.
Our schools need $10 billion in critical repairs and construction now!

This critical funding will ensure SAFE, SECURE, AND UP-TO-DATE learning environments for all California school communities by:
Upgraded classroom technology, science labs, and libraries are essential to compete in the global economy. Funds would go toward approved and long-awaited projects that repair lead pipes, remove asbestos, expand and remodel existing schools and build new ones where they are needed.
Retrofitting for earthquake safety, ADA compliance, fire safety systems, alarms, and smoke detectors, as well as removing asbestos and lead paint and pipes, are critical health & safety measures for our communities.
More classrooms allow for smaller class sizes. Enhanced vocational facilities help students and veterans obtain the necessary skills to get jobs. The simple fact is that for every billion dollars invested in new school construction and modernization work, 15,000 good paying jobs are created.
Paying the $10 billion total in unfunded construction-ready projects and future projects using the budget surplus funds would create a savings of $600 million annually for 35 years – for a total of $21 billion.
